Russia and Burkina Faso discuss bilateral military cooperation

Russian delegation held talks with its interim president Burkina FasoCaptain Ibrahim Traore, yesterday Thursday (31/8) in Ouagadougou, especially for the possible military cooperation of the two states, according to the services of the head of the military regime in the West African state.

According to the statement, the visit of the delegation, headed by the Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Yunus Bek Yevkurov, It followed talks between Captain Traore and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Russia-Africa summit in St Petersburg in July.

Relations between Ouagadougou and Moscow came under the microscope after the military junta demanded the departure of French armed forces in February. Since then, there has been intense speculation that Burkina Faso will strengthen its relations with Russia, like neighboring Mali, where, according to Western sources, mercenaries of the mercenary company Wagner are operating..

The meeting discussed “areas of cooperation” that “primarily concern military cooperation, including officer training at all levels,” among “pilots in Russia,” according to the statement. It was not specified whether Russian military trainers will be sent to Burkina Faso.

The visit is seen as another indication that Moscow seeks to maintain and strengthen its influence in Africa after the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, who allegedly through Wagner had created a network of companies and interests in various countries on the continent and beyond.
