RS: Boat owners are free to work in rescue operations as volunteers

Owners of boats and watercraft are authorized to assist in flood rescue efforts in Rio Grande do Sul. According to the state's Civil Defense, there is no requirement for a license to drive these means of transport.

The resolution came directly from the state government, through the Crisis Office, and aims to expand the authorities' capacity for action. The priority must be help in rescuing victims and evacuating areas affected by water and with access by land impossible.

“[Essa estratégia] helps save more lives and mitigate the impact of the extreme emergency situation faced by several municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul”, says the Civil Defense note.

O number of deaths from the heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul rose to 78 , according to a Civil Defense bulletin released on Sunday night (5). Another four deaths are under investigation to find out whether there is a relationship with the meteorological events.

Also according to Civil Defense, 105 people are missing across the state . Another 175 people were injured because of the rains.

The data still points 341 municipalities affected out of a total of 497 in the state, which represents a little more than 2/3 of the total.

Regarding the homeless, the number is 18,487. The homeless number 115,844. The total number of people affected is 844,673.
