RS announces renewal of climate monitoring system after floods in the state

Rio Grande do Sul announced this Wednesday (4) the renewal of its climate monitoring system. The measure comes months after the environmental disaster that struck the state in April and May 2024. The floods in the state affected 2,342,460 people, leaving 581,643 homeless. Around 65,700 individuals had to go to shelters. The floods caused 163 deaths in Rio Grande do Sul.

The service will be responsible for inspecting and repairing pluviometric stations (rain measurement) and fluviometric stations (river level measurement), with a special focus on twelve priority stations for modeling the telemetry system of the National Water Agency (ANA).

Through the Secretariat of Environment and Infrastructure (Sema), the company Água e Solo Estudos e Projetos was hired to perform technical services in the hydrometeorological monitoring network. According to the state government, R$1.2 million was invested in the project.

Sema’s monitoring network is made up of 100 rainfall and 60 rainfall-fluviometric stations, performing functions such as alerts about critical events, assessment of water availability, verification of water quality and regulation of water resources.

The measure is part of the Structural Projects of the Rio Grande Plan, a state program focused on reconstruction and climate resilience, designed to mitigate the impacts of flooding. The contracted company must present a detailed work plan in the coming days. The company must also present monthly reports on the progress of the activities.

The twelve priority reference network stations that will receive emergency maintenance are:

  • Maua Pier C6
  • Caraa Stream
  • Triumph
  • Coffee Bites
  • Mouth of the Paranhana
  • Corsan Dawn
  • Brothers – Gravataí Channel
  • Candombe Pass
  • Sinimbu Center
  • Rocha Pass CPRM
  • Farrapos Pass
  • High Roller
