A pool overlooking the Trevi Fountain was installed on Thursday (31) to collect coins thrown by tourists during maintenance work on one of Rome’s most famous attractions.
The marble monument was emptied to allow work to preserve the 18th-century fountain. Still, Rome City Hall has created an alternative option for those who don’t want to give up the good-omen tradition.

“It’s beautifully romantic,” said Salvo Ando, a tourist from Sicily, commenting on the basin that will receive visitors’ coins, along with their wishes, until work is completed at the end of the year.
“We knew the fountain was closed, and I feel sorry for the children who are coming to Rome for the first time,” he added.
The fountain still remains visible to tourists, and a walkway will soon be installed to allow visitors to admire the monument from a closer perspective.
Brazilian tourist, Amanda Martins, said she was very excited after seeing the monument. “I can’t explain it, but I’m very happy, very excited,” she said.
A press release from the Municipality said the new system will be used to experiment with quota access to the fountain, which could become the norm in light of the Vatican’s upcoming Jubilee, which begins on December 24.
