Seven hours of dance a day, every day. A life dedicated toartto the bodyto the movement. The joy of telling about her professional sphere, jealously protecting her private one. The years that pass, but the all-encompassing passion that remains. Roberto Bolle, today a splendid forty-seven year old, who moved away from his family from Trino in Piedmont at the age of twelve to pursue his dream, is today the symbol of Italian classical dance. Primo Ballerino della Scala, Principal Dancer of the American Ballet Theater of New York and Guest Artist of the Royal Ballet of London, returns to TV on January 1st for the now usual television appointment Dance with me. Presented by Luca Zingaretti and Christian Capotondiis in its sixth edition and again this year brings an exciting and entertaining show to prime time on Rai Uno, where the dance of the great dancers mixes with pop of the names in entertainment, bringing the large television audience to the art that is most important to him. His is one missionand maybe even responsibility, to bring the dance, to which he has dedicated his whole life, closer to the people. «I want to be an inspiration for i young“, He says. And it succeeds.
How are you living these days?
«The Christmas holidays have always been a family moment for me. They always have been. Whether I’m in Italy or abroad, I always choose to stay with my family. Tradition is meeting each other. This year at home in Piedmont, but for a few days, having the end-of-year shows at the Teatro Regio in Turin»
What memories do you have of your childhood related to this period?
“I have good memories. I left my family very early, I was twelve. Coming home has always been more precious to me than many kids who live with their families. The Christmas period has always had this value. Lunch, dinner, time together. It wasn’t my normal.”
What did you want if you remember?
«Wishes as a child were gifts. I especially remember coveting the prince charming suit. I must have been six or seven, I used to read fairy tales. I wanted the uniform, with the blue band».
Life then really made you a prince charming, don’t you think?
“It is true. There was no idea of dance yet. But in life I found myself wearing that dress often».
And now what do you want?
“It’s very different now. There is always a desire to be in the family, even now family moments are very rare. I’m always around even if I’m based in Milan. Roots are very important to me. It is the family that has given me strength, solidity and structure. They have always been a foundation for me, even in difficult times from which to start again. The moment of sharing is fundamental for me».
For the sixth time he chooses to share with a vast audience on TV.
«Dance with me has reached its sixth edition. It has almost entered the tradition of the Italians and this makes me very happy. It is a great privilege to bring a show like this in prime time, with great guests and important dancers. It’s like a small piece of a puzzle that can change the culture, the perception of dance, inspiring many kids in front of the TV who see these pieces. For me these pieces are really important. They help to perceive dance as a very close art and that’s what has always distinguished my path. I’ve always wanted to bring people closer to dance. In all its forms”.
What will we see?
«The format remains the same, dance is the centerpiece of everything. There will be ballets by big companies, classical, neoclassical and contemporary dance, but what changes are the guests, all ironic and generously involved. From Virigina Raffaele, Elio, Blanco, Dargen D’Amico for many moments of lightness, show and entertainment. We live in a very difficult time, we are aware of so many problems and things happening globally. The war, the economic and financial crisis… Lightness is important. I want to start the year in a good mood, seasoning effectively the most lyrical, magical dance pieces».
His favorite moment?
«There will be no shortage of emotion. In the tribute to Ezio Bosso I will dance to his music. An intense moment, as well as the duet with Blanco».
How will it surprise us?
«We experimented by creating my avatar with a complicated procedure. The biometric scan of my body, 128 cameras that recorded my physical parameters, other sensors to capture the movement and my facial expressions. We live in a historical period where the metaverse becomes a parallel reality, it’s not bad to have moved forward and think you can make shows in that universe. Of course, there won’t be that three-dimensional fruition effect on TV, but I will show ballets and movements that I can’t do in reality ».
Is there really anything he can’t do?
«There are so many movements that I can’t do, more or less difficult. I didn’t learn them as a child and at a certain point it becomes very dangerous to try them at my age. I’m happy with what I learned then.”
Was it difficult to get here?
“There have certainly been moments of difficulty. I see many sacrifices, a part of adolescence that I could not live. The lack of play and freedom of the other kids. But I also see how thanks to dance before and to TV now my character and personality have changed. If I look at myself then, I see myself as shy, withdrawn, introverted. All of this forcing me to go on stage, to go on stage, on TV, live, has helped me push myself further, changing my character. Everything has served to grow, since I had to be the center of attention. Because I just wanted to dance, not be in the center».
In his graphic novel Roberto Bolle written and illustrated by Francesco Cattani reads “A true dream requires sacrifices”.
«Sometimes one works a lot but the dream still doesn’t come true. My dreams, on the other hand, have come true and indeed, exceeded. The biggest sacrifice was being alone in a place that wasn’t mine, leaving home. I suffered from nostalgia, I had doubts and uncertainties. I felt the difficulty of the moment. And then slowly I understood the importance of what I was doing».
What kept you from the dream?
“Passion. That’s the engine that drives. It is a desire that comes from within and that cannot be exhausted. There have been difficult moments, there has sometimes been the thought of leaving everything, but that engine has always been stronger».
Ever thought of a plan B?
«Actually yes, when I went from middle school to high school and I asked my mom to enroll me in Vercelli high school to be closer to home. But then I realized that I couldn’t leave Milan. And since then there has always and only been plan A ».
Do you have anything else today besides dancing?
«In my daily life, in addition to the hours I spend in the ballroom, I have many projects that make up my life. On Dance, the TV, the shows, I’m artistic director, I like to think about all this. Of course, I like travelling, I like sharing time with friends. I can do it little, but I try. Dance remains the priority».
Seven hours a day, every day?
«Most days, between workouts, tests, warm-ups, strengthening, stretching. The physicist is my tool and requires a great deal of daily attention. I’ve been a principal dancer for 25 years. It’s a long career, being able to maintain this great success for so long is only thanks to continuous and constant dedication».
Do you think about the passing of time?
«I am aware of the changes in the body, but luckily dance is an art. Unlike sportsmen, who have a shorter career, we dancers are also artists and can choose roles that are more appropriate to age and stage maturity. There will be less physical roles than those that maybe take place at the age of twenty, but the priority becomes giving emotions through the characters, enhancing the actor’s quality more».
Is your relationship with the mirror good?
«It’s not always positive, there are ups and downs. Like a bit for everyone I think. I live it in everyday life, constantly, I dance in front of it. It’s a love-hate. Sometimes I don’t want to see myself but the mirror in front of me is relentless, it tells you the flaws, what you have to work on. Sometimes I have to stay away from it.”
Her mirror is also the public that made her a sex symbol.
«I’ve never experienced public appreciation badly, but it’s always been something extra for me. If I hadn’t had an artistic value perhaps I would have experienced it as a problem. Instead I played with it, because first of all I feel like an artist and a performer».
How much does he expect from himself?
“Much. But in recent years I have become more lenient. As a youngster I used to get mad at every little detail, now I accept that no one is perfect, not even me. It is impossible to achieve perfection, my goal is to give an emotion. I’ll never stop wanting to improve myself, but if there’s no perfection, that’s okay too. I put my soul into it, but I’m human”.
What is he moved by?
«Many things, from seeing something at the cinema to a natural landscape. I’ve been to Oman, the simple beauty excites me. But I am also moved in front of a TV series. Art in general strikes chords in my intimacy».
Is there still someone you would like to dance with?
«Many are missing from the appeal, but certainly Fiorello. He’s always too busy for me. I wait for it. I’ll have to do Dance with me until it comes.”
Off stage who are you?
“I think I’m a real, genuine, direct person. And I think the public appreciates me because over the years they have understood that they can trust me. I am a person who tries to be an example for many kids. I have always felt responsible for what I do. I try to be the best version of me.”
Without ever telling anything personal though. Isn’t that a limit?
“Everyone does their part. I do many parts in my life to guide and inspire and give values. I feel good about myself. No need to tell about my personal sphere. I may not be perfect, but I always try to do my best.”
