Roberta Metsola: A single, sovereign European state is the only way for Cyprus

“Europe cannot really be as whole as the Cyprus remains divided”, emphasized its president European Parliament, Roberta Metzolaat the start of the 3rd Cyprus Forum, which takes place today (29/9) and tomorrow (30/9) at the Municipal Theater of Nicosia and which is organized by the Economic Forum of Delphi in collaboration with the non-profit, non-governmental organization Oxygono.

In a taped message aired on the first day of the Cyprus Forum, Ms Metsola said that “the only way forward is to have a single, sovereign European state, a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council”. He emphasized that every effort should be made to restore trust and find functional solutions by building trust between the two communities.

Ms. Metsola also referred to her recent visit to Cyprus, noting that during her visit she had constructive meetings on a wide range of issues that dominate the minds of European citizens in this turbulent time. He also pointed out how deeply moved he was when he saw from Deryneia the enclosed city of Famagusta, “realizing how anachronistic this division has become”.

He said that Cyprus will always be in their hearts not only because it is a proud citizen of the Mediterranean but because “we understand each other, we know the potential of Europe, we know that we must be united and we know that we are better, stronger, safer when we act together”.

Referring to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, she said that if there is a time to react and stand united against those who seek to destroy what we have built, it is now.

At the same time, Ms. Metsola added that our joint actions will determine how we move forward and consolidate the European edifice, noting that Cyprus plays a fundamental role in the defense and defense of European values ​​and the European way of life.

He also said that the history of Cyprus is an example of resilience of how someone can overcome insurmountable difficulties and come out of them stronger. He emphasized that just as Cyprus is not moving away from Europe, neither will Europe move away from Cyprus.
