A woman was shot dead after being chased by another car and crashing into a Civil Police vehicle on Avenida Brasil, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, in the early hours of this Sunday (11),
Elaine Esteves, 39, and her husband, Carlos André, were returning from a party when they were chased by another car, after an alleged traffic accident that they both claimed not to have noticed.
In fear, the two fled and crashed into the back of a police car from the Capital Homicide Division (DHC), which was in a convoy on Avenida Brasil. See the image below.

After the crash, shots were fired from inside the vehicle and at least four shots hit the car in which Elaine and her husband were traveling. The woman was shot and did not survive her injuries.
“He told Elaine, ‘Calm down, honey, I hit the police car.’ He was relieved, but to his surprise, he started hearing gunshots. They didn’t give him time to get out of the car, they didn’t give him time for anything,” said Erika Adida, a friend of the victim.
According to Erika, while helping his wife, Carlos André was insulted, attacked and thrown to the ground by the police.
“It was supposed to be just an accident, the police were supposed to help them in this chase, but they killed her, unprepared police,” he lamented.
The Civil Police stated, in a note, that a team from the Capital Homicide Division was surprised by a collision near Trevo das Margaridas, next to one of the accesses to the Parada de Lucas community.
According to the statement, “the police officers fired gunshots to stop the vehicle’s sudden and violent attack on the police convoy” and immediately called for medical assistance, but the victim did not survive his injuries and died at the scene.
The driver of the car that chased the couple after the alleged traffic accident has already given a statement to the police, but the information has not been released.
Victim would have turned 40
According to friends, Elaine would have turned 40 in September and had already planned and paid for the party.
Mother of two daughters, the woman was a cook at a guest house in Itaboraí, in the metropolitan region of Rio, an establishment that is run by the family.
“She was a wife, a friend, an enlightened, good person and a warrior. A person who did not deserve to have left this life in this way,” says Erika, who demands justice.
The wake and burial of the victim will take place at Parque da Paz Cemetery, in Itaboraí, at 3 pm, also this Monday (12).
