Former UK finance minister Rishi Sunak today confirmed his candidacy for the leadership of the Conservative Party to replace Liz Truss as head of government.
Sunak announced the candidacy on his Twitter account, saying that the goal is to overcome the “deep economic crisis” that affects the country and unite the party.
“The choice our party makes now will decide whether the next generation of Britons will have more opportunities than the last. That’s why I’m running to be your next prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party,” Sunak said.
The United Kingdom is a great country but we face a profound economic crisis.
That’s why I am standing to be Leader of the Conservative Party and your next Prime Minister.

The former minister also said that he was at the head of Finance at the most “difficult” moment for the country, referring to the covid-19 pandemic. And he added: “The challenges we face are even greater. But the opportunities, if we make the right decision, are phenomenal.”
Liz Truss announced her resignation last week, just over 40 days into the job, after sharp criticism of her economic program.
