Rio wants to use drones to reforest the city and reduce the effects of heat

This Monday (27), the city of Rio de Janeiro announced a package of measures that will be adopted to alleviate heat waves. One of the main strategies announced involves the use of drones to carry out reforestation throughout the city, the so-called “forest drones”.

The announcement was made at a press conference in the presence of secretaries Daniel Soranz, of Health; Tainá de Paula, from Environment and Climate; and the chief executive of the Rio Operations Center (COR), Marcus Belchior.

According to the city hall, the drone allows for an increase in scale for seed launching. For example, where a person covers 1 hectare per day, the drone can cover 50 hectares. The device is capable of launching 100,000 seeds in just 5 hours.

In addition, measures to expand green areas were also announced, including in favelas. According to the city hall, there will be prevention and control of occupation of risk areas and recovery of degraded spaces.

Hydration points

The Contingency plan for extreme heat also has more than 100 hydration points distributed in family clinics and municipal health centers.

Among the measures adopted, it is planned to distribute water and isotonic drinks to homeless people, as well as clothes, flip-flops and sunscreen. Pots of water will be distributed for pets and vans will be distributed throughout the city.

The initiatives were planned after the high temperatures recorded this November in Rio. On the 18th, the maximum temperature reached 42°C and the thermal sensation was 59.7ºC.
