The Civil Police scheduled for this Tuesday (12) the statements of the nursing team present in the delivery room when anesthesiologist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, 32, was caught raping a pregnant woman during a cesarean section.
He is being held in the José Frederico Marques Public Jail, in Benfica, in the capital and a triage unit of the Rio de Janeiro prison system.
The testimonies will be collected at the Women’s Police Station, in São João de Meriti, a city in Baixada Fluminense, where the Heloneida Studart State Women’s Hospital is located, the scene of the crime. The researchers will analyze the biological material discarded by the doctor, such as gauze, bandages and other materials used by him on the last shift.
The experts want to analyze traces of similar crimes that may have been committed by the doctor in deliveries prior to the act.
The nursing professionals responsible for the footage that supported the act changed the operating room after having suspected the doctor’s role in previous procedures, performed on the same shift. Among them, excessive sedation and atypical movements.
The doctor also asked the child’s father to leave the operating room at the time of delivery, which constitutes a violation of the federal companion law, which allows the pregnant woman a company before, during and after the procedure.
Also for this Tuesday, the doctor’s custody hearing is scheduled for the afternoon, which will be held at the Benfica Custody Center. The purpose of the procedure is to assess the need for the arrest, whether it should be maintained or not, in addition to the legal aspects of the execution of the act. The law provides for the session to be held within 24 hours of the arrest.
The images, which CNN chose not to show it, they show the doctor passing the penis across the patient’s face, unconscious, because of the medication, and introducing it into the pregnant woman’s mouth. Afterwards, the images show the anesthesiologist cleaning the patient and the organ, so as not to leave any traces of the crime.
On Monday (11), the first hospital employees gave testimony. Deputy responsible for the case, Bárbara Lomba investigates other possible criminal conduct by the doctor and seeks to identify other victims.
The Regional Council and Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj) instituted a disciplinary process for the dismissal of the doctor. The procedure has a period of 180 days to complete, but the chairman of the board, Clovis Munhoz, understands that the investigations will be completed before the deadline.
Giovanni Quintella Bezerra worked in 10 other hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, between public and private units. The State Department of Health and the Health Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro reported that an internal investigation will be opened to take administrative measures, in addition to the notification to Cremerj.
On Monday, the Novais Advogados Office, responsible for the doctor’s defense, said it would not comment on the case until it had access to the entirety of the process, in order to analyze the testimonies. At the end of the day, the bank issued a note, in which it informed that it was leaving the case. The new person responsible for the anesthesiologist’s defense has not yet been announced.
According to the Penal Code, the rape of a vulnerable person is punishable by eight to 15 years of imprisonment, and is characterized when the victim is under 14 years of age, sick or intellectually disabled, without discernment for the practice of the act or unable to offer resistance. .
