Orthopedic doctor Marilton da Silva Vaz, 47 years old, underwent surgery on Monday night (25) and his health condition is considered serious. He was shot in the cervical region during a shootout on Avenida Brasil, near Bonsucesso, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, last Sunday afternoon (24).
The information is from the Rio State Department of Health. The man was transferred, also this Monday, from the Azevedo Lima State Hospital, in Niterói, in the metropolitan region, to the Alberto Torres State Hospital, in São Gonçalo, in the same region, where performs the procedure. This is his third transfer. A new medical bulletin must be released after surgery.
Marilton was leaving a religious Christmas event when the shooting occurred. In total, nine people were injured. Marilton's father, pediatrician Mário Vaz, aged 80, was also injured. He was grazed in the head and taken to Bonsucesso General Hospital, but has since been discharged.
Mário Vaz was awarded the Tiradentes Medal, the main honor granted by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), in March last year.
Another injured person, pastor Fernando Rodrigues da Silva, who was at the same religious event, has a serious health condition, according to the Municipal Health Department. He is admitted to the Hospital Municipal Souza Aguiar, in the center of Rio. The unit does not have permission from the family to provide more details.
How did the incident happen?
According to the Military Police, agents from the Expressway Policing Battalion (BPVE), spotted a car with a suspicious attitude leaving Parque União, in Complexo da Maré, in the north of Rio.
The police ordered the vehicle to stop and, according to the PM, the suspects did not comply and shot at the police. A vehicle was hit, in addition to the nine victims.
According to the Civil Police, the 21st DP (Bonsucesso) is investigating the case.
Avenida Brasil is the busiest road in Rio. More than 200,000 vehicles cross the avenue daily, according to an estimate from Rio City Hall. Cars passing along the road have been a constant target of criminals.
On Saturday (23), state deputy Giselle Monteiro (PL) reported having suffered an attempted robbery. She shared on the internet images of gunshot marks on the bodywork of the car she was using at the time.
