Rio City Hall says it will comply with rules prohibiting street vendors in Uruguaiana

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes (PSD) announced through his social networks that he will comply with municipal rules prohibiting street vendors on Rua Uruguaiana. According to him, the decision was taken in common agreement with governor Cláudio Castro (PL).

“I spoke with Governor Cláudio Castro and (…) in the coming weeks, the installation of any stall or commercial point in the public space (on Rua Uruguaiana) will no longer be allowed.”

According to the mayor, there is evidence that some of the cell phones stolen in the city are sold there.

A CNN , the city hall stated that the rule will only apply to public space and that, therefore, it will not affect the Camelódromo. The agency will begin occupying the area in the coming weeks to implement the rule.

The Public Order Secretariat, together with the police forces, will plan an occupation action in Uruguaiana in the coming weeks to prevent the installation of irregular street vendors and the illegal occupation of public areas, as well as other irregularities, especially in that region where it is known that part of the material sold comes from robberies and thefts.

In January, Paes announced the ban on the Acari fair, which takes place in the North Zone of the city. He justified his attitude based on the sale of products of criminal origin at the fair.
