Reuters feature on the recovery of Greek tourism

Report on the recovery of tourism in Greece, where travelers from all over the world are flocking this year, the global news agency Reuters published.

The publication accompanies extensive videos with statements by the Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilia and Greek hoteliers, who express their optimism for this year’s tourist season, despite the problems caused by inflation and job shortages.

“We are very happy and satisfied” said V. Kikilias, pointing out that “although it is a very difficult year – with the pandemic still here, with the global energy crisis and the war in Ukraine – we see travelers from Europe, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Israel, from all over the world, to come to Greece with their families”.

“After two years of a hard pandemic, we are happy to have our guests and a normal season,” said Babis Voulgaris, a hotelier in Corfu. “Occupancy is already high in our hotels and we are optimistic for the rest of the summer as well,” he said.

Michalis Minadakis, general manager of a luxury resort outside Athens, said energy inflation was reaching “unbelievable” levels, but demand for travel was high and bookings for this year had started as early as last Christmas. “Overall, I think 2022 will be even better than 2019,” he said.

According to the report, tourism is estimated to bring to the Greek economy 80% of the revenue of 2019, which was a record year in the country in terms of travel receipts.
