HMD, manufacturer of Nokia phones, announced this Sunday (25) that it will produce retro flip-style phones inspired by the Barbie doll accessory.
According to a company statement, the device will be launched in a partnership with Mattel, owner of the Barbie brand.
According to HMD, the phone should arrive by summer 2024 in the northern hemisphere (starting in June).
“Promising style, nostalgia and a much-needed digital detox, this retro phone will change the history of smartphone culture and be this summer's hottest accessory,” the company writes in the statement.
The company may reveal the look of the new product later this week, during the Mobile World Congress (MWE), which takes place between the 26th and 29th of February in Barcelona, Spain. MWE is one of the main technology events in the world, and several brands take advantage of the period to publicize their most important launches.
The famous doll's phone arrives during a period of celebration for the brand. The film “Barbie” (2023), by American director Greta Gerwig, caused a worldwide uproar upon its release last year and is one of the favorites in the current entertainment awards season.
The film received eight Oscar nominations, the main award in world cinema. The ceremony takes place on March 10th.
