Several retired military officers have issued a letter in support of US Vice President Kamala Harris as Republicans attempt to link her to the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
“Vice President Kamala Harris is the best — and only — presidential candidate in this race who is qualified to serve as our commander in chief. She has demonstrated her ability to address the toughest national security challenges in the Situation Room and on the international stage,” the group wrote in a letter from National Security Leaders for America.
The former leaders explained in their letter that Kamala has demonstrated an ability to address national security challenges “from rallying our allies against Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, to standing shoulder to shoulder with our allies in the Indo-Pacific against China’s provocative actions, to advancing U.S. leadership in space and artificial intelligence.”
The letter comes as House Republicans and Democrats have issued conflicting documents blaming the US withdrawal from Afghanistan for its failures. The Republican report cites Harris as having worked “in concert with President Biden behind the scenes to withdraw all US troops”. It also seeks to implicate the vice president in its accusations by referring to the current administration as “the Biden-Harris administration”.
Generals criticize Trump
The group of retired generals blamed former President Donald Trump for “putting the military in harm’s way” while he was in office and argued that he did not leave the Biden administration in a position to execute a withdrawal efficiently.
“Without involving the Afghan government, he and his government negotiated a deal with the Taliban that freed 5,000 Taliban fighters and allowed them to return to the battlefield,” the letter said.
The retired military officials also accused Trump of leaving President Joe Biden and Kamala “with no plan to execute a withdrawal and little time to do so. This chaotic approach has severely hampered the Biden-Harris administration’s ability to execute the most orderly withdrawal possible and has put our military and allies at risk.”
