Retail in SP has the best 1st semester in revenue since 2008, says FecomercioSP

Retail trade in the state of São Paulo ended the first half of the year with real sales 37% above the historical average for the period.

The result is the highest for the semester since the series began in 2008.

Between January and June, retail sales increased by 11.3%, which represents an increase of R$54.7 billion compared to the same period in 2021.

The data are from the Conjunctural Survey of Retail Commerce in the State of São Paulo (PCCV), released by FecomercioSP.

The federation states, in a note, that “the improvement in the level of employment, the fall in inflation, the increase in the supply of credit (in the first half of the year, concessions grew 26%) and the normalization of the pandemic scenario are some factors. that explain the results”.

FecomercioSP adds that these conditions increased the level of consumer confidence in the period.

In June, real sales grew by 8.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, with real sales of R$ 93.3 billion.

The increase was the best result of the historical series for the month.

In terms of accumulated sales, all the segments evaluated in the survey showed historical records, with the exception of vehicle dealerships and home appliance and electronics stores.

The clothing, fabric and footwear stores segment led total sales in June, with growth of 18.4%.

The sector was followed by the sectors of pharmacies and perfumeries (14.9%), auto parts and accessories stores (14.2%), other activities (12.7%) and supermarkets (7.2%).

There was also an increase in the segments of car dealerships (3.4%), construction material stores (1.9%), furniture and decoration stores (0.7%) and home appliances, electronics and department stores (0. 1%).

For the second half of the year, the institution believes that the results should remain positive, albeit lower. ”

Considering the current level of consumption — and the recovery already underway in the services sector, which should promote a considerable injection of resources into the São Paulo economy — the pace of expansion of the sector should continue throughout the second half of the year, however, with less vigorous compared to the current ones”, he explains.

The federation also assesses that “unpredictable factors, such as political and social ones, and unexpected turmoil in the economy can have a negative impact on consumer confidence”.
