The Republican Party reached the number of 218 federal deputies in the United States House of Representatives, according to projections by the CNN , and thus confirmed that it will have a majority in the House. Democrats, however, retain control of the Senate.
The victory that gave the Republicans the 218th deputy came with Mike Garcia, elected in a California district.
The Democrats have 208 seats, with nine remaining disputes being investigated since the last 8th, the date of the mid-term elections.
In the Senate, defined since Saturday (12), the Democrats had 50 seats, against 49 for the Republicans. There is a seat that is still in dispute between the parties – in Georgia, where there will be a second round dispute, on December 6 -, but control is already with Joe Biden’s allies; in the United States, it is the vice president of the country (the Democrat Kamala Harris) who presides over the Senate and casts the tie-breaking vote.
Despite confirming the resumption of the House – which had a Republican majority, more recently, between 2010 and 2018 –, former president Donald Trump’s party expected a better performance in the midterm elections, which renew all seats of deputies every two years.
Even without confirming all the results, the polls showed that neither party will have a significant majority in any of the Houses of Congress. Electoral polls indicated the possibility of a “red wave”, which would lead to a wide advantage of the Republicans in both the House and the Senate.
So far, Republicans have won 18 seats from Democratic deputies, who took six seats from their opponents. In the Senate, where 35 of the 100 seats were up for grabs this year, there has only been one exchange so far: with John Fetterman’s victory in Pennsylvania, the Democrats won a seat that belonged to the Republicans.
