A strong cold wave advances over the country this Tuesday (17). The temperature has dropped sharply in the southern states, in many areas of the Southeast and Midwest. The city of São Joaquim, in Santa Catarina, recorded freezing rain on Monday night (16), around 11:30 pm.
According to Climatempo, the capitals Porto Alegre (RS), Florianópolis (SC), Curitiba PR), São Paulo (SP) and Campo Grande (MS) may record low temperature records for the year 2022.
There is a possibility of snow in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, and of freezing rain in the highlands of Rio Grande do Sul, in the southern and northern highlands of Santa Catarina and in the south of Paraná, due to the combination of the very cold air and the humidity brought by the Yakecan cyclone.

The feeling of cold in the South region increases due to the moderate to strong wind that blows through the three states. Because of the cyclone that is close to the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, many areas of Rio Grande do Sul, including Greater Porto Alegre, and the Center, West and South of Santa Catarina may have rain showers.
In other areas of Paraná, the sun appears, but the cold is intense and the day dawns with frost in the Center and East of the state, including in Greater Curitiba.
At dawn, the temperature reached -0.2°C in Porto Amazonas (PR). In some areas of São Joaquim, in Serra Catarinense, the thermometer marked almost 0.1°C below zero.

Temperatures also drop throughout the day in cities in the Southeast region. The weather will be sunny and very cold in most areas of the state of São Paulo, southern Minas Gerais and the Triângulo Mineiro region.
In the Greater Belo Horizonte region, the sun can appear between many clouds and the temperature is also falling. Rain showers still occur on the coast of São Paulo and in the state of Rio de Janeiro, where it also begins to cool. Already over Espírito Santo, in the East and Center-North of Minas Gerais, the rain can be heavy this Tuesday and the air is stuffy.
Rain showers and sunny periods are expected for Goiás, Distrito Federal, North and East of Mato Grosso and for the entire Northeast and North of Brazil. It doesn’t just rain in the region of Rio Branco and in the East of Acre and in the Center, West and South of Rondônia. The cold polar wind also reaches these two states and causes the temperature to drop.
