Record number of coronavirus deaths for the second consecutive day in Thailand

A new record of deaths from covid-19 within 24 hours was recorded today in Thailand, for the second day in a row, as authorities step up measures to tackle the third wave of the rapidly spreading coronavirus epidemic in the country.

In the past 24 hours, 2,438 new cases of covid – 19 and 11 deaths were recorded, bringing the total number of infections in Thailand to 55,460 and deaths to 140.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha wrote on Facebook on Saturday that provincial governors could close public spaces and impose curfews if they deem it necessary to stem the spread of covid-19.

Schools, bars and massage parlors closed a week ago and will remain closed until May, while the sale of alcohol in restaurants has been banned in a bid to strengthen social distancing.

Bangkok authorities have announced the closure of parks, cinemas, gyms and daycare centers from tomorrow, April 26, to May 9.

Meanwhile, shopping malls in 18 dangerous provinces, including the capital Bangkok, will be open from 11am to 8pm on Saturday, the Thai Retail Association said.

The country’s authorities had managed to keep the number of covid-19 cases relatively low, but the new outbreak of the epidemic and the appearance of the variant strain of coronavirus B.1.1.7 has caused more than 24,000 infections and 46 deaths in just 25 days.

Thailand’s policy of keeping coronavirus-positive people in the hospital, even if they have no symptoms, has raised concerns that there will not be enough beds if the number of patients with severe symptoms increases. Health officials insist there are still more than 20,000 vacant hospital beds across the country.

In order to get rid of beds faster, the Thai Prime Minister said that the health authorities are considering reducing the quarantine in hospitals for asymptomatic patients to 10 out of 14 days, allowing them to spend the remaining four days in self-isolation at home.
