Passengers face great difficulties using public transport this Wednesday morning (22) in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, due to the stoppage of bus services.
According to the Road Workers Union (Sintro-PE), the reason for the mobilization is the delay in paying the fortnight’s salary, which was not deposited by the stipulated deadline, the 20th, in five operating companies: Borborema, São Judas Tadeu, Metropolitana, Caxangá, Globo and Pedrosa. The union informed that the buses will only run again when payment is made.
In a video published on social media, the president of Sintro-PE, Roberto Carlos, highlighted that delays in paying drivers’ salaries are not rare. “We warned on social media that we would do it if the worker didn’t receive his money. We came to the conclusion that this bad habit, which is not the first time, has been happening over time, which passes very quickly, but the bills do not sleep”, he stated.
In a statement, the Union of Passenger Transport Companies in the State of Pernambuco, Urbana-PE, reported that the salary delay was caused by the lack of transfer of subsidies by the state government. Urbana-PE also announced that, although the salary advance has been postponed, the credit will be made this Wednesday (22). “Considering the confirmation from the state government that the credit relating to the subsidy will be made this Wednesday, the operating companies will pay the salary advance today until noon”, guarantees Urbana-PE.
Also according to Urbana-PE, the stoppage was caused by the blocking of garages, which began on Tuesday night (21), but the situation will be normalized by the end of the morning.
THE CNN contacted the Government of Pernambuco, through the Grande Recife Consortium, responsible for managing public transport in the Metropolitan Region, which informed “that it communicated yesterday (21) to the Union of Passenger Transport Companies of Pernambuco (Urbana -PE) authorization for the transfer of subsidies to permission holders.”
Meanwhile, integrated terminals and bus stops are overcrowded throughout the Recife Metropolitan Region. Due to the stoppage of bus stations and the disruption caused to public transport in the RMR, the Higher Administration of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) informed that academic and administrative activities are suspended this Wednesday (22) in the morning. “UFRPE will monitor events relating to this strike and will issue a new note as soon as there is any update on the case.”
