Former President Barack Obama reminded Pope Francis on Monday as “the rare leader who made us want to be better people.”
“In his humility and in his gestures at the same time, simple and deep-embracing the sick, ministering to the homeless, washing the feet of young prisoners-he took us from compliance and reminded us that we all have moral obligations with God and each other,” Obama wrote in a statement, along with his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama.
When he was president, Obama took the rare initiative to travel to Andrews Air Base to greet Francisco at the beginning of the Pontiff’s successful visit to the United States in 2015.
Later, the Pope led a brief parade at the outdoor Paparmobile by the South Lawn, which was packed with thousands of people who had come to witness a rare papal visit to the White House, some carrying babies to Pope to kiss.
