Tension between Greece and Albania continues to be ignited by the imprisonment and stay in a penitentiary of Freddy Beleris. According to ERTon the part of Fredis Beleris, they are waiting for Rama’s next move, with the most likely scenario being his declaration as relegated.
In his announcement, the elected mayor of Heimarras, who has been in custody for 3 months, launched “fire” against the prime minister of Albania. It was preceded by a long post by Edi Rama, in which he argued that due to his Greek citizenship, the “undertrial”, as he describes him, seeks special treatment.
Beleris says for his part that Tirana does not recognize the Greek minority in Heimarra and notes: “The “good” Edi Rama only refers to the fact that I also have Greek citizenship. He forgets that I was born in Heimarra, I am of Greek origin and I speak Greek. Everyone in my family speaks Greek, as does the majority of the population of Heimarra.”
Edi Rama had referred to Beleris as a defendant who should remain in custody until the end of the judicial process, while he appeared very disturbed by the militant gathering in Heimarra: “The politicization of an issue of Albanian justice, to the point where a protest is organized here in Albania by elected authorities in Greece, including the mayors of Greece’s two largest cities, could become the script of a sarcastic film about interstate relations between the Balkans.”
The issue was also commented on by the mayor of Thessaloniki, who attended the gathering. “I didn’t see it as a show. I saw a lot of people with great anxiety and with the desire to have the mayor they chose (…) It is a message of support for the – recognized by international treaties – Greek National Minority” points out Konstantinos Zervas. Finally, Mayor Heimarras reiterates that he can also swear in prison: “In closing, says the “good” Edi Rama to let justice do its work undisturbed. Let him then tell Prime Minister Edi Rama to let me be sworn in as mayor. This is not the job of justice. It is a decision of the general director of prisons.”
