The intense rains that have hit Bahia since last weekend have left at least six people dead and 3,700 housed across the state, according to the Superintendency of Protection and Civil Defense of Bahia (Sudec).
The situation affects 44 municipalities, 30 of which are in a state of emergency, including Ilhéus, Itororó, Santa Luzia and Feira de Santana, which are facing flooding.
In addition to those displaced, around 200 people are homeless after losing their properties. Infrastructure also suffered damage, with roads compromised. The State Infrastructure Secretariat reported that teams are working to repair the damage.
Among the affected roads is BA-513, between Maragogipe and São Roque do Paraguaçu, where a crater opened, requiring a detour implemented at the beginning of February.
Other closures include the bridge in Angical, where part of the road gave way after the collapse of the Ouriçangas Dam, and BA-381 (Quijingue-Cansanção), where the culvert connections were compromised.
On BA-647, between Palmeirinha and Aiquara, erosion compromised one of the bridge heads over the Rio de Contas, while on BA-130 a culvert gave way due to the rain.
According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), intense rains are expected to persist until Thursday (22), affecting not only Bahia, but also areas of Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará and Pernambuco.
