The mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo (MDB), reported this Saturday morning (4) that a dike located in the Sarandi neighborhood overflowed and asked the population of the region to leave the area.
The dike where the spill occurred is close to the building of the Federation of Industries of Rio Grande do Sul (Fiergs).
According to the mayor, since the previous night, there had been concerns about the dike's resistance to the force of the waters of the Gravataí River. Melo stated that the municipal administration is arranging for the removal of residents.
“I was on the dike behind Fiergs, which was overflowing. We worked all night and managed to make this seal. However, this morning the leak started over the dike. That's why I want to invite you to accept leaving your homes and coming to the city hall's shelters, because we can lose material goods, life won't come back.” warned the mayor.
Sebastião Melo called on residents of the villages of Minuano, Nova Brasília, Farroupilha, Asa Branca, Elizabeth and other affected regions to leave their homes and go to city hall shelters. He indicated the Salzano Vieira da Cunha school as a reference point for the safe movement of residents.
