Rains in RS: death toll after storms reaches 56

The latest assessment made by the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul, released this Saturday morning (4), shows that the number of people killed as a result of the rains that have affected the state since the beginning of the week has risen to 56. In total, 281 municipalities were affected by the storms.

In addition to the dead, the state reports 74 injured people and 67 missing. Unlike previous reports, Civil Defense did not provide an updated list of municipalities that recorded deaths.

The rains that punish the territory of Rio Grande do Sul have already affected 377,497 people, according to the report. Of this total, 24,666 are homeless and 8,296 were sent to shelters.

The number of deaths in this year's tragedy already exceeds that recorded in the events of September 2023, when the state was hit by the passage of an extratropical cyclone. At the time, 54 deaths were registered by Civil Defense. The most affected region was Vale do Taquari, which, in 2024, is also being hit by storms.

Between the previous balance, released late Friday afternoon (3), and the current one, the number of fatalities jumped from 39 to 56 – 17 more, therefore.

According to Civil Defense, the state has 128 total or partial blocking points on 68 highways. The state has at least 860,000 people without water and 350,000 points without electricity.

On Friday, the government of Rio Grande do Sul reported that four dams in the state are at an emergency level for failures, with an imminent risk of failure. Another four are at alert level, which is when anomalies pose a risk to the safety of the dam, requiring measures to maintain safety conditions.
