The heavy rains that hit the city of Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, this Sunday (20) caused at least five deaths, according to the state Civil Defense and the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department.
The bulletin released at dawn on Monday (21) also informs that there are two missing in the city and one person was rescued alive. The Fire Department has already received about 40 calls to rescue people, landslides and landslides.
According to the Civil Defense of Petrópolis, 95 occurrences were recorded, most of them due to landslides. The highest rainfall was recorded in the São Sebastião neighborhood, in the south of the city, with 415 millimeters in the last 10 hours. More rain is expected in the coming hours.
In Angra dos Reis, two people also died as a result of storms this Sunday. The rainfall record in the city was 272 millimeters in the last 12 hours.
Firefighters and Civil Defense responded to incidents related to rescuing people from points of flooding and falling trees.
Second tragedy in just over a month
The biggest tragedy in the history of Petrópolis completed one month last Tuesday (15). On February 15, heavy rains caused a series of landslides and floods, which left 233 dead and more than 600 homeless.
The total of rain in three hours reached 258.6 millimeters, below the registered mark this Sunday.
Since the day of the tragedy, the Fire Department has been working with teams to find four people still missing. Currently, there are about 60 soldiers a day searching two points: the Morro da Oficina, which was one of the most critical places, and the Piabanha, Quitandinha and Palatinato rivers.
Among the strategies to find victims, sniffer dogs, drones and excavators were used. There were 24 rescues, in addition to 300 animals pulled from the rubble alive.
