Rains are expected to hit the North, Central-West and Southeast regions; Inmet warns of “danger”

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued, this Friday morning (19), a danger alert for several parts of Brazil due to the risk of intense rain between today and tomorrow (20). The warning covers states from the South to the North of the country, encompassing 13 states.

Southeast and Midwest

The formation of a cold front over the Atlantic Ocean should increase humidity over the east of the Southeast Region, leaving atmospheric conditions unstable during the next weekend. According to Inmet, there is a high chance that parts of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais will be hit by intense rains that, from Monday (22), could reach other southeastern states and part of the Central-West.

On Saturday (20), the area most affected by the highest daily rainfall accumulations should be the eastern part of São Paulo (including the capital and the metropolitan region) and areas on the coast of São Paulo, where, in some places, rainfall may vary between 80 millimeters (mm) and 100 mm.

The heaviest rains are expected to occur, on Sunday, between the north coast of São Paulo and areas of the south, east (including the capital and Metropolitan Region), mountains of Rio de Janeiro and in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, where it may rain between 70 mm and 90 mm in some points.

From Monday (22), intense rains, with significant daily accumulations, should be concentrated between Espírito Santo, southern Bahia, central-northern Minas Gerais, Goiás and the Federal District — a forecast that, as highlighted by the institute in a note released this morning, “it will be monitored with the update of numerical weather forecast models in the coming days”.

If surprised on the streets by strong gusts of wind or lightning, people should not take shelter under trees. If they need to stop their vehicles, drivers should also avoid parking near transmission towers and billboards. At home, it is recommended to turn off electrical appliances by removing the plugs from the socket. Help or guidance can be obtained from Civil Defense (telephone 199) and the Fire Department (telephone 193).

North

The alert indicates a chance of heavy rain in the central, north, southwest and south regions of Amazonas; northeast and north of Mato Grosso; the east of Rondônia and the Madeira-Guaporé mesoregion, which includes the capital of Rondônia, Porto Velho.

According to meteorologists from the institute, it may rain, in the indicated areas, between 30 millimeters/hour (mm/h) and 60 mm/h. Furthermore, given the possibility of intense winds, which can vary between 60 kilometers/hour (km/h) and 100 km/h, the population must be aware of the risk of falling trees and branches, flooding, electrical discharges and interruption of electricity supply.
