Rain, lightning and wind: Belo Horizonte is under civil defense alert

The capital of Minas Gerais is under warnings of heavy rain accompanied by lightning and gusts of wind for this weekend. The minimum temperature this Friday (8) was 17.9°C, the estimated maximum is 26°C and the minimum relative humidity was around 65% in the afternoon.

The alert issued by the Municipal Civil Defense is valid until 8am this Saturday (9).

The forecast is for rain of around 60 mm, that is, it could rain up to 60 liters per m² in the affected regions of Belo Horizonte. The central-south region of the capital has already recorded, in just eight days, almost 22% of the rain expected for the entire month of November.

Winds can reach up to 50km/h, which can cause electricity cuts and falling branches and trees.

In addition to Belo Horizonte, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET), other regions of the state are also included in the potential danger alert.

According to the agency, areas of instability over the Brazilian Southeast favor the occurrence of rain showers, especially in the Center, South, West and Triângulo Mineiro regions.

The municipal Civil Defense advises that, in the event of heavy rain, the population should avoid staying in areas subject to landslides and flooding.

  • Redouble your attention! Avoid flood areas and do not travel on streets subject to flooding or near streams and rivers during heavy rain.
  • Do not cross flooded streets or let children play in floodwaters or near streams.
  • Do not take shelter or park vehicles under trees.
  • Pay special attention to slopes and hills.
  • Never approach broken electrical cables. Call CEMIG (116) or Civil Defense (199) immediately.
  • If you notice cracks in the walls of houses or the appearance of cracks, depressions or water mines on the ground, notify Civil Defense immediately.
  • In case of lightning, do not remain in open areas or use electrical equipment.
