The hottest day of the year ended with the long-awaited rain in the capital of Minas Gerais, after more than 170 days of drought. This Wednesday (9) Belo Horizonte recorded, for the second time in the month of October, the hottest day of 2024. The thermometers registered 36.8º between 2pm and 3pm, according to the municipality’s Civil Defense.
In the late afternoon, around 5 pm, the heat and low humidity gave way to rain, which arrived after 172 days of drought in the capital of Minas Gerais, the second longest drought ever recorded.
According to Civil Defense, the rain arrived lightly, but ended up intensifying after a while. There were also records of power outages in some neighborhoods in the capital of Minas Gerais due to electrical discharges.
For this Thursday (10), the Civil Defense of Belo Horizonte issued a warning for new rain showers of 40mm to 60mm, with the possibility of hail, lightning and wind gusts of 60km/h. The alert is valid until 8am on Friday (11). Temperatures should not exceed 28ºC.
In addition to Belo Horizonte, other regions of the state also recorded heavy rain and gales. According to the Minas Gerais Fire Department (CBMMG), in the city of Ipanema, two houses were flooded as a result of heavy rains.
In the city of Luz, central-west of MG, on BR-262, a hailstorm with gales tore off the roof structure of a gas station, falling on some vehicles, with no casualties.
In Montes Claros, south of Minas, there was a partial collapse of a wall measuring around seven meters. Firefighters were deployed for structural assessment.
There were also large tree falls in several cities.
Civil Defense recommendations:
- Redouble your attention! Avoid flood areas and do not travel on streets subject to flooding or near streams and rivers during heavy rain.
- Do not cross flooded streets or let children play in floodwaters or near streams.
- Do not take shelter or park vehicles under trees.
- Pay special attention to slopes and hills.
- Never approach broken electrical cables. Call CEMIG (116) or Civil Defense (199) immediately.
- If you notice cracks in the walls of houses or the appearance of cracks, depressions or water mines on the ground, notify Civil Defense immediately.
- In case of lightning, do not remain in open areas or use electrical equipment.
