Queen’s songs are known around the world, and the band’s work may soon be sold for an impressive sum.
A source familiar with the acquisition of the songs told CNN that discussions are “well underway” for Universal Music Group to acquire Queen’s back catalog from Disney Music Group.
The value of the sale could exceed US$ 1 billion (R$ 5 billion) and, according to the source, the deal “should be closed in a month”.
A CNN reached out to Universal and Disney for comment, as well as a representative for the band.
Bruce Springsteen had already hit the headlines in December 2021 with the sale of his music catalog for a total close to $500 million.
Springsteen’s fee remains the highest amount ever paid for an artist’s musical work, but if the Queen sale goes through, a new record will be set.
The billion dollars for Queen songs is certainly so high thanks, in part, to the 2018 Academy Award-winning film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which told the story of the group’s early years with a focus on the late frontman Freddie Mercury.
The production ended up inspiring a resurgence in the popularity of the band’s music.
Justin Bieber, David Bowie and Sting are other big names that also recently completed sales of their respective music catalogues.
