Queen Elizabeth sends message to Brazil for tragedy in Petrópolis

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom sent a message of condolences to Brazil this Monday (21) in one of her official duties, despite having tested positive for Covid-19.

In a message sent to President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the monarch said she was deeply saddened to learn of the destruction caused by the floods in the city of Petrópolis, which has already caused more than 175 deaths.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all those who lost their lives, loved ones and homes, as well as the emergency services and all those working to support recovery efforts,” his message said.

Buckingham Palace said on Sunday that Elizabeth, 95, had mild symptoms of a cold but was expected to continue with light engagements, an indication that the world’s oldest and oldest current monarch is not seriously ill.

The queen, who has been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, joked just four days ago that she couldn’t move much, and fears about her health have increased since she spent a night in hospital last October for an unspecified illness.

“I know the entire House (of Commons) will join me in sending our best wishes to Her Majesty the Queen for a full and speedy recovery,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Parliament. “It’s a reminder that this virus has not disappeared.”

The Queen is due to speak with Johnson by phone on Wednesday for her regular weekly update, and plans to proceed with other scheduled virtual diplomatic audiences with foreign ambassadors, the palace said.
