A male puma was photographed on the trails of the Três Picos State Park last Monday (2). The feline was observed for the first time at Pico da Caledônia, in the conservation area in the Serrana Region of Rio.
The image, released this Thursday (5), was captured by one of the camera traps installed on the park’s trails. The action is a partnership between the State Environmental Institute (INEA), which manages the park’s conservation unit, and the Animal Adventure Project, which provided the equipment.
To obtain high-resolution images, more than 35 camouflaged cameras activated remotely were installed. “Monitoring the fauna allows us to follow these animals, deepening our study of the species,” stated the coordinator of the Mountaineering Center of the Três Picos State Park, Rominique Schimidt.
The jaguar is the animal that symbolizes the Três Picos State Park.
Also known as the cougar, the puma feeds on wild animals of various sizes and plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the ecosystems in which it occurs. The species has the ability to adapt to various types of environments, being most active at dusk and at night.
