Public Ministry needs to “overcome” the role of accuser and “welcome” victims, says Aras

The Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, said this Monday (27) that the Public Ministry (MP) needs to “overcome” the role of “accuser” and “welcome” the victims.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office needs to overcome the idea of an exclusively accusing body to start playing the role of host. This is also one of our activities, our duties,” Aras said.

According to the attorney general, “the MP needs to overcome this idea and also welcome the victim, not because she is not eventually responsible, but because she deserves respect for her dignity as a human person as much as the defendant, as any citizen”.

In an event organized by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), Aras also stated that it is necessary to remember that “the victim is not guilty” and cannot be “re-victimized”.

“The victim is not to blame. The victim is simply the victim. And the circumstances in which he becomes a victim cannot be taken to be re-victimized. It cannot be taken to punish her much more often than the offense that it is up to the justice system to investigate in place of private revenge,” she added.

The event in which Aras participated was the launch of the National Movement in Defense of Victims, a project organized by the National Council of the Public Ministry (CNMP) with the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and the School of the Public Ministry of the Union.

Some people spoke before the attorney general, including Ana Carolina Cunha de Oliveira, mother of the girl Isabella Nardoni, who died in 2008. Aras, however, did not refer to any specific case in defending the victims’ rights and a more welcoming role. by the Public Ministry.

“Certain voluntarism, observed in the exercise of the duties of members of the judiciary and the MP, in addition to other operators of the law, can have drastic consequences, affecting the dignity of the human person and even the credibility of fundamental institutions. Where there is voluntarism, whether due to ideology or lack of knowledge of the limits of the law, there is a risk of violations. And changing this situation is a challenge that is imposed on all of us”, said Aras.
