The faithful will be able to visit Pope Francis’ tomb from next Sunday (27), in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The pontiff’s funeral and funeral will take place on Saturday (26) at 10am, local time (5am from Brasilia).
Until Friday (25) is held the funeral open to the public. According to the Vatican, more than 60,000 people have paid tribute to the Pope so far.
This Thursday (24), the Holy See released a photo of what will look like Francisco’s tomb. It will be made in marble and will only bring the inscription “Franciscus” and the reproduction of his pectoral cross.
The Pope’s grave venue was prepared in a niche from the side ship of the Basilica, between the Paulina Chapel and the Sforza Chapel, and is located near the Altar of San Francisco.
Pope asked for simple tomb on a will
In Pope Francis’ will, signed on July 29, 2022, the Pontiff sought to reinforce his will as to his burial.
He expressed that he would like his remains to be placed in the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, in a simple grave, excavated in the ground, without decoration and only with the inscription “Franciscus”.
Finally, Francis left the message that he offered “the Lord the suffering that was present in the last part of my life for world peace and the fraternity among peoples.”
“I have always trusted my life and my priestly and episcopal ministry to the mother of our Lord, Santa Maria. Therefore, I ask my remains to rest waiting for the day of resurrection in the papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore,” says the document.
Pope Francis’ death
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, took the lead of the Catholic Church in March 2013.
He marked the history of the institution as the first Latin American Pope and the first Jesuit to occupy the position.
The pontiff died after a stroke and irreversible heart failure, Vatican doctor Andrea Arcangeli said in a death certificate released on Monday (21).
Cardinals from around the world now address Rome and the Vatican to participate in the conclave, the secret election that will elect the next Pope. This should occur in early May.
The clerics remembered the pontificate of Francis, highlighting his “humility and bravery.”
