Opposition protests in Venezuela, which mark a month after the contested elections, need to grow considerably to have a real impact on the government of Nicolás Maduro, according to an assessment by the coordinator of the postgraduate course in International Relations at FESPSP, Flávia Loss, in an interview with CNN 360° .
According to Loss, “these protests would need to grow a lot bigger to really have any impact within this scenario in Venezuela.”
The expert highlighted that the Maduro regime, considered an autocracy, still has significant popular support and, mainly, from institutions, such as the Armed Forces.
Institutional and popular support for the Maduro government
Despite suspicions of electoral fraud, Loss highlighted that the Maduro government maintains a considerable support base.
“Even though we don’t know exactly the result of these elections, that’s exactly what’s at stake, we don’t have the concrete result, we suspect that there was in fact fraud, but the Maduro government still has popular support,” he explained.
The analyst also highlighted the institutional support for the government: “The Court of Justice has already assessed and ruled in favor of Maduro’s third term.”
This factor contributes to the stability of the regime, even in the face of opposition protests.
Political scenario and perspectives
For there to be a significant change in the Venezuelan political landscape, Loss argues that much greater pressure would be needed than is currently observed.
For her, the demonstrations would have to reach a level capable of forcing the government to take measures such as calling new elections or considering other proposals under discussion.
The expert also mentioned the importance of observing the pro-Maduro movements that are scheduled to occur.
Comparing the size of opposition demonstrations and those in favor of the government could provide a better perspective on the real level of opposition to the established regime.
