Prince Harry Returns to Althorp, the Home Where Mother Diana Grew Up

Back in the UK for the funeral of his beloved uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, Prince Harry visited a place close to his heart: Althorp House, the luxurious childhood home of his mother, Lady Diana Spencerin Nothamptonshire. The funeral of Fellowes, who was married to Diana’s sister Lady Jane, was held two days before the 27th anniversary of the princess’s death on August 31.

Harry was hosted by his uncle Charles Spencer at Althorp: Diana, who was 36 when she died in a car crash in Paris, is buried on the island in the center of Round Oval Lake, which is located on the estate. It was Count Charles himself who wanted his sister’s remains at Althorp, where Diana had grown up and where, still a teenager, she had met the then Prince Charles. Only family members can visit the princess’s memorial, in absolute privacy. For everyone else, the Round Oval is off limits.

Two years ago, during a visit to the UK, Prince Harry took his wife Meghan Markle to Althorp to visit her mother’s grave. “No visit to this place has ever been easy, but this… the 25th anniversary,” he wrote in his autobiographical book Spare. «And it’s Meg’s first time. Finally, I was bringing home the girl of my dreams to meet her mom. We hesitated, hugging each other, and then I went first. I put flowers on the grave. Meg gave me a moment, and I talked to my mother in my head, told her I missed her, asked her to show me around». And again: «Imagining that Meg might also have prayed alone for a moment, I walked away, walked around the hedge, and peered into the pond. When I returned, she was kneeling, her eyes closed. I asked her, as we walked back to the boat, what she had prayed for at her mother’s grave. And she answered me like this: “I asked her to be our guide.” »

Although both Harry and William attended Lord Fellowes’ funeral, at St Mary’s Church, Snettisham, Norfolk, the two brothers sat far aparteach with a different set of cousins. Harry’s participation in the memorial for his late uncle only confirms his strong bond with his mother’s family.
