Prince Harry, here’s what his body language says at the coronation of his father Charles

Prince Harry has now become an open book for royal experts, British and non-British. His moves seem predictable, his reactions predictable. Not that I have much other choice: Palazzo’s response to his removal has only occasionally shown a few olive branches.

The coronation of his father Carlo definitively demonstrated the state of relations in the family. He entered Westminster Abbey with his cousins Beatrice and Eugenia (his favourite) and their respective husbands, but he walked down the aisle alone.

Relegated to the third row during the ceremony, with the feathers of his aunt Princess Anna’s uniform blocking his view, he dissolved in an instant immediately after the end of the ritual. No balcony, no pleasantries: he got on a plane to go back to Los Angeles, to celebrate the fourth birthday of the eldest son Archie. What else could he have done? Excluded from greeting from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, isolated and almost left to itself, there was not much else left for him to do.

During the coronation, however, his every movement was put under a microscope and, according to body language expert Blanca Cobb, words are not needed to explain it and she said clearly that the attempt to appear casual has failed: «The firm walk, the rigid posture, with shoulders back height of the head – in addition to the arms on the sides and the face and hands – reveal a slight tension. His smile is tight and his lips are tight, the corners barely moving. And then there’s a seriousness in the look that shows tense eyes. His fingers are slightly curved, his thumb pressing down on his left hand. All of these signs suggest that Prince Harry is mildly stressed.” But there’s more: the way he looks at his brother from time to time (or at least the back of his neck) is index of sadness.

In church, no contact between them, no sign, as in Eton times recounted in the memoir Spare – The minor (published in Italy by Mondadori).

In order to be present at the big day of his father Charles and the monarchy, Harry did the bare minimum by swallowing his pride, now alien and far from the world in which he grew up. The spotlights were focused above all on the family of the heir to the throne, William, who behaved in an exemplary and impeccable manner by carrying out every detail of the ritual scheduled for the day, under the direction of Kate.

They are the future of the monarchy and he has chosen not to be a part of it. Not without a lump in his throat, however, as can be seen from the few hours he spent at the coronation.
