Thousands of Socialist Party supporters traveled from across Spain to take part in a rally in Madrid today to call on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to stay in power after his surprise announcement this week that he may step down as prime minister. On Wednesday, Sanchez said he would retire “for a few days” to decide whether he wants to continue leading the government as a Madrid court opened a preliminary investigation into the business affairs of his wife Begonia Gomet. Sanchez said the move was part of a smear campaign against him and his family by political opponents.
