The actor Richard Gere recalled details of his role as Edward in “Pretty Woman” during the Venice Film Festival and revealed that one of the most iconic scenes in the film was improvised .
During Gere’s talk this weekend, the scene was shown in which his character is sitting at the piano when Julia Roberts’ character Vivian enters the room. He takes off Vivian’s robe and sits her on top of the piano before proceeding to kiss her. When the scene ended, the audience erupted in applause.
“Yeah… no chemistry,” Gere joked wryly, drawing laughter. “These actors obviously had no chemistry with each other.”
“I haven’t seen that in a while, it’s a sexy scene,” he added.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor explained that the scene was improvised because director Garry Marshall wanted to include Gere’s piano playing skills in the film.
“Garry said to me, ‘What do you do late at night in a hotel?’ And I said, ‘Well, I’m usually jet lagged, that would be the time when I’m in a hotel. So I stay up all night and there’s usually a lounge somewhere or a bar, and I find a piano and I play the piano.’ And he said, ‘Well, let’s do something with that,’” he explained.
“We basically improvised that scene, and he said, ‘Play something moody.’ I just started playing something moody, what this character’s inner life was like,” he added.
