President of Venezuelan Assembly asks government to break off relations with Spain

Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez proposed on Wednesday (11) that the legislative body ask President Nicolás Maduro’s government to break diplomatic relations with Spain, after the Spanish Parliament recognized opposition figure Edmundo González as president-elect.

In a speech widely applauded by the Chavista bloc, Rodríguez, one of the people closest to Maduro, ordered the Parliament’s Foreign Policy Commission to take a resolution to the plenary “for final approval.”

“Let all representatives of the Spanish government delegation leave here,” exclaimed Rodríguez.

The deputy’s statement came hours after the Spanish Parliament validated – in a divided vote – a proposal by the Popular Party to recognize González as president-elect in the July 28 elections in Venezuela and ask Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to do the same.

On Wednesday itself, during a trip to China, Sánchez said that the government will not change its position and, together with other countries, will seek to mediate the post-election crisis in Venezuela.

Spain is one of the nations that has asked Venezuelan authorities to publish the minutes of the last presidential elections, arguing that this measure would provide transparency and certainty of the results.

Both the National Electoral Council (CNE) and the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela (TSJ) declared Maduro the winner, although the results have not been published. Both institutions are made up of people considered close to Maduro.

Since the evening of July 28, the opposition Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) has rejected the official results and claims that the true winner is González. On Sunday (8), the former ambassador arrived in Spain, after receiving political asylum in the country. González claims that in Venezuela he was the target of political pressure and persecution.
