The President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, called on the United Nations (UN) to take immediate action against the continued “aggression” promoted by Israel against the Palestinians.
Abbas’ speeches took place during a phone call with the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, according to the state news agency “WAFA”.
Abbas called on the UN to “immediately intervene to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, especially in the Gaza Strip”, the agency reported on Monday (9).
The president emphasized the urgent need for medical and humanitarian aid in Gaza, drawing attention to the looming humanitarian crisis. He urged the UN to “uphold its responsibilities recognized by international legitimacy and ensure the protection of the Palestinian people.”
In response to Abbas’ concerns, Guterres acknowledged the UN’s ongoing efforts to provide urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza residents. He also mentioned that the organization is actively liaising with stakeholders to contain the current escalation.
The Islamic group Hamas, classified by the United States and the European Union as a terrorist group, presents itself as an alternative to the Palestinian Authority, led by Abbas.
The PA was established in the Israeli-occupied West Bank in 1993 through the Oslo Accords, a peace pact between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). It stipulated that the PLO give up armed resistance against Israel in exchange for promises of an independent state alongside Israel.
