French President Emmanuel Macron awarded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky France’s highest order of merit, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor.
“Tribute to Ukraine and its people. Homage to you, dear Volodymyr, for your courage and commitment,” Macron tweeted alongside a video of the ceremony in Paris this morning (9).
The award is the highest distinction that a French president can bestow on another head of state.
“It’s too much for me,” said Zelensky, adding that he wanted to dedicate the award to the Ukrainian people.
Earlier, Macron told Zelensky that France is “determined” to help Ukraine in its war against Russia.
“We support Ukraine, determined to help it win,” Macron said.
Ukraine can count on France and its allies to win the war, Russia must not and will not win the war.”
Macron also said that France will continue to provide military support to Ukraine and Paris will “adapt and readjust” to Kyiev’s needs.
Ukraine can count on us to build peace,” said the French leader, speaking alongside Zelensky and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The three leaders dined at the Élysée Palace on Wednesday night ahead of the European Union’s summit meeting on Thursday in Brussels. Macron and Zelensky will fly together to the Belgian capital on Thursday morning, according to the Elysée.
