The president Biden met today with Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and expressed support for the Belarusian people ‘s pursuit of democracy and human rights in the country of the former Soviet republic.
“I had the honor of meeting her Svetlana Tikhanovskaya at the White House this morning. “The United States stands with the people of Belarus in their campaign for democracy and universal human rights,” Biden wrote in a Twitter post.
Tikhanovskaya pushed for stronger Washington action against the government of President Alexander Lukashenko during her visit to the country.
He met earlier with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
Last week, she called on US officials to impose sanctions on companies in her country that operate in the potash, oil, wood and steel sectors.
