Premie from Spain says that cause of blackout is inconclusive

There is still no conclusive information about the cause of the blackout that affected most of the Iberian Peninsula, Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Monday (28).

Spain and Portugal were hit by a widespread drop in energy, which paralyzed public transportation, caused large traffic jams and delays on flights.

Transport networks were paralyzed, hospitals were out of power and people were trapped in the subway and elevators.

Public service concessionaires tried to restore the network, but Spanish power transmission operator, Red Electric, said the interruption could last from six to 10 hours.

Authorities evaluated the possibility of a cyber attack caused the blackout. However, the president of the European Council, Antonio Costa, said there is no evidence.

In turn, REN, National Energy Nets, Portugal’s electric operator, stated that the fall in the country’s energy supply was the result of a failure in the Spanish network, related to a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as “induced atmospheric vibration”.

The Spanish and Portuguese governments gathered to discuss the interruption, which also briefly affected parts of France.

In addition, a crisis committee was created in Spain, sources said familiar with the situation.
