The Rio de Janeiro Military Police extended the security scheme for the last weekend of Carnival 2024. Previously scheduled to take place until this Saturday (17th), when the Special Group Champions Parade takes place, at the Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí, the operation continues until Sunday (18).
The Facial Recognition system continues to be used around the Sambódromo, with the presence of the Corporation's command car, and drones, in addition to six observation towers. There will also be policing with teams from the Enyr Cony dos Santos Cavalry Regiment (RCECS).
The Bloco da Anitta and the Monobloco that parade this weekend, on Avenida Presidente Antônio Carlos, in the center of Rio, will also have police. The circuit will remain surrounded by guardrails and will have a facial recognition system.
In total, 26 interception and search points will be implemented, in addition to 250 metal detectors being used by police officers and six observation towers along the route.
Security agents will be in 46 carnival blocks that will parade this weekend, with emphasis on some traditional ones, such as Kizomba (Lapa), Chá da Alice (Centro) and Mulheres de Chico (Leme). The shows at Terreirão do samba and the Campeonato Carioca games, at Maracanã and Engenhão, are also included in the reinforcement.
Carnival in Rio has more than a thousand arrests
Until this Wednesday (14), 1,140 people were arrested during the festivities by the state's Military and Civil Police. According to the government, 12 thousand military police officers and more than 3.3 thousand civil police officers and 900 criminal police officers were mobilized in the security scheme.
There was a 20% reduction in theft and pedestrian theft crimes, compared to the 2023 carnival. There were also recorded increases of 34% in arrests in the act, 32% in the apprehension of minor offenders and 5% in requests for measures protective.
The Military Police seized 75 firearms, including seven rifles, and recovered 47 cell phones, according to the balance of actions released this Thursday (15).
The Civil Police reports that 600 investigations were initiated during Carnival, 85 incidents registered by foreign tourists (61 for theft crimes).
