Portugal has already recorded four aftershocks since the 5.3 magnitude earthquake that hit the country on Monday (26).
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the earthquake in the early hours of the morning had a maximum intensity of IV/V on the Mercalli scale, that is, degrees between moderate and strong.
“So far, four small-magnitude aftershocks have been recorded, none of which have been felt by the population,” said IPMA in a statement.
The Institute added that the earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale was recorded at 5:11 am at the continent’s Seismic Network stations, with its epicenter about 60 kilometers off the Portuguese coast.
The aftershocks had magnitudes of 1.2, 1.1, 0.9 and 1 on the Richter scale.
THE CNN Portugal confirmed that the earthquake was felt throughout the Lisbon region, including the capital, but also in Oeiras, Loures and Almada.
On social media, residents from various parts of the country posted videos reporting that they woke up after feeling the ground shake.
Regions of Spain also felt the tremor.
Regarding the expected damage, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) indicates that it will be “very light”, even in the area of greatest impact.
The Portuguese federal government said it was in contact with all competent services.
A statement from the Executive confirms that “there is no record of personal or material damage to date”, and asked the population to remain calm.
“We appeal to the population to remain calm and follow the recommendations of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority,” the note says.
Journalists Nuno de Sousa Moreira and Rita Barão Mendes, anchors of CNN Portugal were caught by surprise at the time of the earthquake.
The pair were interviewing a diplomacy expert when the tremor began.
