Porto Alegre confirms the first case of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus

A person coming from the United States and currently staying in Porto Alegre was confirmed, this Friday (10), as the first case of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus in the state capital. She is vaccinated with a dose of the Moderna vaccine against Covid-19, which is given in two doses, not being available in Brazil so far.

This is the seventh case of the new strain in Brazil: there are three in São Paulo, two in the Federal District and now two in Rio Grande do Sul.

After undergoing medical care, an RT-PCR test was performed in a private laboratory. With a positive result, the test was sent for genomic analysis at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). The case was notified to the Epidemiological Surveillance of the Municipal Health Department.

“The Directorate of Health Surveillance of the Municipal Health Department monitors the case, both of the person confirmed and of close contacts”, declared the City of Porto Alegre in a statement.

The first case of Ômicron in Rio Grande do Sul was confirmed, on December 3, in a woman residing in Santa Cruz do Sul, in the interior of the state, who returned from a trip from South Africa.
