Presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) and Donald Trump attended Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday (26). This marks the first event in which the two leaders were present at the same time.
Before the funeral, Trump had a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine. The White House pointed out that the meeting was productive.
On Friday (25), Lula went to the funeral of Francisco in the Basilica of St. Peter. He was accompanied by the first lady and a presidential entourage.
Other representatives of the three powers of Brazil also attended the Pope’s funeral.
Hugo Motta, President of the Chamber of Deputies; David Alcolumbre, President of the Federal Senate; and Luis Roberto Barroso, president of the Federal Supreme Court, registered in the celebration of the Pontiff.
What happens after Pope Francis’ burial?
The papal funeral marks the first nine days of mourning of the global church.
Another mourning mass will be held in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday (27). The meeting will be led by Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, often seen as one of the main candidates for the papacy.
In the coming days, the Vatican will announce the date for the beginning of the conclave that will choose Francisco’s successor. The ceremony is expected to begin between May 6 and 11.
