Pope Francis woke up from anesthesia and started joking – What the surgeon who performed the operation said

The surgeon Sergio Alfieri, who this afternoon operated on Pope Francis at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli hospital, said that “the pontiff is fine, he woke up from the anesthesia and joked with him.” Alfieri added that the operation removed internal scarring in the intestine, which was causing pain in the Francis and had been created after a previous operation.

“When are we going to do the third operation?” asked the doctor, jokingly, the Argentine pope. Alfieri explained that there will be no lasting effects from today’s operation and predicted that Francis will stay in the hospital for five to seven days. “Give us some time,” he told reporters.

Pope Francis is 86 years old and has undergone a total of four surgeries. Today’s, as it became known, lasted three hours according to the Athens News Agency.
