Pope Francis visits a prison in Rome on Thursday (17) amid Easter celebrations.
In the Holy Thursday Lava tradition, the pontiff washes the feet of detainees as a way of remembering when Jesus surprised the disciples by assuming the role of a servant and washing their feet during the last supper.
This year, the Pope could not perform the custom, but met with 70 detainees.
“I like to do every year what Jesus did on Holy Thursday, the foot washing, in prison,” said Francisco. “This year I can’t do that, but I can and I want to be close to you,” he added.
The pontiff was discharged last month, after spending almost 40 days hospitalized with bilateral pneumonia.
